micro-teaching self-assessment

MICROTEACHING SELF—ASSESSMENT

What were your reactions to receiving and giving feedback?

My reaction to receiving feedback was positive because I know that by receiving feedback I can improve my teaching skills. However, I was kind of nervous and anxious because I was looking forward to hearing what my classmates and teachers had to say about my performance. Also, I think that receiving this kind of feedback was very helpful because it allowed me to know the strengths, as well as the weaknesses that I possess as an ELT practitioner.

I was kind of nervous since pointing out people’s strengths and weaknesses is not easy. However, I knew that I had to provide an objective feedback. Also, giving feedback is very helpful because when I give feedback I reflect upon my own strengths and weaknesses as well. I realize that sometimes I commit the same mistakes that the person who is giving a class commits.

What themes emerged in the feedback about your teaching? Anything surprising?
One of the themes that emerged in the feedback about my teaching was that I need to keep on track with the pace of the lesson because I did not make use the time completely. I was missing like two minutes. I am aware that I could have done another kind of activities, but I did not want to run out of time. I have to work in this area.

What were your strengths? How can you build upon them?
According to the feedback that I received one of my most remarkable strengths is that I possess very good language skills regarding to grammar in discourse and pronunciation. Also, I am able to have a good classroom management because I engage all the students while teaching. Besides, I was told that I kept eye contact with the students, and that I have a good voice projection. Something important to mention is that I have a good teaching pose because when I am in front of the class I really show that I am the teacher. Also, this makes me look confident when I am in front of the class.

What are some specific areas for improvement? Take the time to identify 4 specific action steps for addressing these areas.
The pace of the lesson is an area that I have to improve.  Sometimes, activities take too long or the activities end before the time that I have set. I need to pay careful attention to the time that I assign to each activity while crafting the lesson plan. I think that I have to take some specific actions such as keeping a chronometer in order to calculate how much an activity can last. Also, I will look for information in order to craft my lesson plans because sometimes the activities that are develop are not suitable for the students. I should adjust my lesson plans to de time that I have available to teach the class.
